Crane Operator Apprentice Program

Prior to being accepted into the Crane Operator Training Program all participants will be required to have completed or to have obtained the following:
1. 2 yrs or 2000 hrs of service as a Highway Heavy Operating Engineer Apprentice/Journey worker or be a Journey worker Operating Engineer Oiler in good standing. Existing Oilers in the trade will have the opportunity to participate in the program prior to the program accepting transfers from the Highway Heavy Apprenticeship Program.
2. Have “ALL” of the requirements of a 2nd year Apprentice completed.
(Paperwork, assessment, time cards, related instructions, etc.)
3. Meet “ALL” the requirements of ANSI B 30.5 2004. (See attached)
4. Possess an O.S.H.A 10hr Certification.
5. Possess a “Valid” CDL Class A license and avalid DOT health card.
6. Complete O.S.H.A Subpart P Competent Person Certification.
7. Pass a written entrance exam.
**Note** It is possible for a person to receive credit for previous work experience. In order to receive this credit, a "Request for Previous Experience" form must be completed and approved by the Director of Training. The maximum amount of credit granted shall not exceed 6000 hours. Candidates who meet all prerequisites will be considered first. If space allows candidates who do not meet all prerequisites will also be considered.
Length of Crane Apprenticeship
The total time spent in the program will ultimately be based upon the apprentice’s ability to comprehend various subjects and apply them to various tasks. The minimum time in the program is 8000 hours (minus previous experience that is granted). Persons who are unable to achieve the goals set forth in the training outline will be offered remedial help. However, if a person is unable to comprehend the program after additional time is given they will be removed from the program.

Related Training Objectives
The objective of the Crane Operator Apprenticeship Program is to provide the basic knowledge and hands-on skills required for the apprentice to safely and efficiently operate cranes under the rules and regulations set forth by Local 49, the construction industry, contractors and “ALL” government safety organizations.
